The number of Dutch people who own cars has risen fast since the 1970s. In 2000, there were more than five million cars on the roads. This has led to traffic jams and other problems. Government is trying to keep traffic moving, so that goods can travel through the Netherlands quickly and people can get to commercial centres easily. It is building new infrastructure where the roads have become too busy and encouraging people to use cars less. Instead, they can telework from their homes, carpool, or use public transport.
